IGN reviews LOBO: HIGHWAY TO HELL #1

November 5, 2009

Scott Ian and Sam Keith's Lobo: Highway to Hell is based on the type of formula comics companies love: take a celebrity capable of potentially bringing outsiders into comic stores, give him an under-used property that fits his sensibilities, pair him with a renowned artist with a history with said property, and then see what sort of magic they come up with. In this case, however, and especially considering the sensibilities of the creators involved, the magic is surprisingly minimal.

Lobo: Highway to Hell #1 reads very much like the first comic Scott Ian has ever written. Ian, a devoted comics fan in addition to being a thrash metal icon, definitely seems thrilled to be writing a Lobo comic, but that isn't necessarily an entirely positive thing. Though his enthusiasm is contagious, it seems like he's having so much fun writing Lobo that he couldn't be bothered to come up with a plot. The story is essentially one big absurd set-piece after the next, which wouldn't be so much of a problem if Ian wasn't so content to have Lobo simply commentate his every action with random pop culture references, bad puns, sophomoric jokes and awkward dialogue.
