IGN reviews DETECTIVE COMICS #858

October 30, 2009

JH Williams pulls off an extraordinary artistic high wire act in the pages of Detective Comics #858, seamlessly shifting in and out of three wholly different styles over the course of his and Greg Rucka's twenty-page lead feature. Each of these stylistic approaches is powerful and beautiful in its own right, and each pushes Rucka's story to new heights. I don't think many artists would have the nerve to alter their style so drastically in the course of one issue, let alone the talent to pull it off. Williams has both in spades.

Detective Comics #858 kicks off the long awaited origin story of Batwoman, and the fact that I opened this review by again salivating over Williams' art despite this being Rucka's best written issue yet should tell you a lot. This really is a brilliantly drawn book, and not for the same reasons I called previous installment brilliantly drawn. Nevertheless, Rucka deserves plenty of praise as well, as his decision to flash back to Kate's childhood gives a ton of new insight into her character. But man, Williams' art sure does elevate this story considerably.
