I'm finding it endlessly fascinating to observe how J. Michael Straczynski is choosing to challenge himself with his work at DC. First came his series of Red Circle one-shots designed to update old Archie Comics superheroes and integrate them into the DCU, and while those issues all left a lot to be desired, they were still interesting examples of a veteran writer applying his craft in unexpected ways.

His follow-up, JMS' first issue on The Brave and the Bold, is entirely different but no less captivating. As if to say he hasn't had his fill of obscure characters, JMS takes on the exceedingly goofy Dial H for Hero in a team-up with Batman. The results are so strong, you'll be left wondering if perhaps JMS can grant dramatic weight and legitimacy to any ragged superhero character.
