Like her famous cousin Superman, Supergirl is easily faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive. However, her most remarkable ability is not being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but having a solo title that not only survives but also thrives in a recession-era comics marketplace that has been historically tough on female lead characters.

Indeed, in the past few months, long-struggling titles like "Catwoman," "Birds of Prey," "Manhunter," "Amazing Spider-Girl" and "She-Hulk" have all seen their final issues. Yet "Supergirl" 's sales inexplicably continued to soar while most readers - including Comics Guy - found its stories spotty at best and unreadable at worst.

However, when writer Sterling Gates and penciller Jamal Igle took over the title with issue No. 34, they immediately changed the perception of the character in both the DC Universe and in fandom at large.
